THE strike by more than 1000 mine workers over a living-out allowance at Gold One International's Modder East operations has entered a second week with no negotiations having taken place, the National Union of Mineworkers said on Thursday.

THE strike by more than 1000 mine workers over a living-out allowance at Gold One International's Modder East operations has entered a second week with no negotiations having taken place, the National Union of Mineworkers said on Thursday.

The union said Gold One this week "misled its shareholders" by saying it was in talks with the NUM.

"The workers, most of whom are migrant workers, have no proper accommodation at the mine and have erected shacks around the mine," the trade union said.

NUM has demanded that Gold One provide workers with R900 as a living-out allowance, which will enable them to rent cheap accommodation. Most do not qualify for housing loans, it said. - I-Net Bridge
