DANIEL Buys' life is filled with good fortune. At only 24 he has acted and sung in some of the biggest productions put on local stages in recent years.
Idols and Janice Honeyman's Snow White are just two of these. And to think that it might not have happened at all since a career as a chef almost lured Buys away from the limelight.
His talent for singing was first recognised at his hight school - St Stithians. He started singing in the Duke of Cornwall Singers Choir and started classical voice training, eventually achieving cultural honours and winning the Saints Singer of the Year award.
After school Buys left Johannesburg to attend the Higgs School of Good Cooking in Cape Town, where he completed a one-year diploma in professional cookery.
He attributes his love for cooking to his sister's decision to leave home.
"I got so bored after my sister left home I then started spending time watching my mother cook. In no time I started cooking myself and enjoying it too," Buys says.
While in Cape Town he heard through friends of auditions for the stage production of Grease. Buys' audition was so impressive he landed the lead role.
Playing the infamous Danny Zuko reignited his love for performing and it was then that he decided to put the frying pans aside and pursue a career as an actor.
In 2005 he returned to Johannesburg, where he enrolled at Damelin College for a diploma in contemporary music, which he completed in 2006. In 2007 he sang his way to fifth place in Idols.
He has become known in the entertainment industry as the Singing Chef.
He describes the Idols experience as having been surreal.
"I wasn't that surprised when I got voted off. My last performance was pretty bad, so I expected it.
"The experience was so surreal. I was glad to finally be able to leave the house and go enjoy being a celebrity for 15 minutes."
Buys returns to his love of things gastronomic . He first tries Woolworth's orange nectar honey.
"This is wonderful.
"It has a nice balance of sweetness. It leaves a slight tang at the back of the throat, but not too much."
Next he tries Goldcrest honey.
"This one is really sweet. It's also much sharper on the back of the throat."
About the BioNectar pure honey he has this to say:
"This is much more mellow. I like how it coats the whole mouth. It tastes a lot like caramel."
Lastly, he tastes Little Bee honey.
"It's pleasant and not too sharp and it's sweet enough."
Buys describes himself as a "French classically trained chef with contemporary twist".
With his mouth coated in honey, he declares that the BioNectar honey is the best.
