Msengana is back on air

IT'S official! Bad Boy T has joined urban youth radio station 5FM.

The DJ, who now simply goes by the name Thomas Msengana, will host the Breakfast Show on Saturdays and Sundays from 7am to 10am. He starts this Saturday.

His latest job will end a year in the radio wilderness after he abruptly left Metro FM last April following disagreements over his future at the station - reportedly as a result of Kenny Maistry's return as the station's Breakfast Show host, Msengana's slot until he left.

Said Msengana on his decision to join 5FM: "We've been in talks for a while now but the final decision was confirmed about two weeks ago.

"I've been listening to other people (on radio) for a year and I decided to make the move to 5FM. I really like what these guys are doing - breaking barriers with the kind of music one does not normally hear on other stations."

While he admits it will be difficult to adjust to a move from a "black radio station" to one perceived to be "white", he said he was excited by the challenge ahead.

"I've always been about challenging myself, and what better way to do that than to enter unfamiliar territory?"

Not every aspect of his move to the station will be unfamiliar, though. Msengana, who admits to being a sports fanatic, will explore this passion as he did on the now defunct Woza Weekend on SABC1 - presented with Nothemba Madumo.

5FM marketing manager Justine Cullinan said the station would not be planning anything big to publicise Msengana's appointment as "we want him to settle into his new role as quickly as possible."

Msengana jokingly said he was "relieved" at having a job after a year of unemployment. He said his wife, fellow radio presenter Unathi Nkayi, would no longer have to carry the burden of "paying all the bills in the house".
