KZN ready for multitude of revellers during Easter

DEPARTMENT of economic development and tourism in KwaZulu-Natal will work closely with all civil servants to ensure the safety of people planning to visit the province over the Easter holidays.

"The Easter weekend is one of the key events in the tourism calendar; we are expecting thousands of people to descend on our beaches to enjoy the remaining days of summer," said departmental spokesperson Bheko Madlala.

Madlala said there were a number of entertainment events organised by various stakeholders on the beaches and other venues in the region.

He said there were programmes that the department has put in place to cater for the safety of the masses over the holidays.

"As a department, in conjunction with the Sharks Board, we have put in place a Comprehensive Beach Safety Strategy. We will strive on ensuring the safety of swimmers and surfers from shark attacks."

Two weeks ago, MEC for tourism Mike Mabuyakhulu and the Sharks Board put the nets around the North Beach area to prevent sharks from getting near swimming areas.

Madlala urged people to enjoy themselves through all activities and entertainment the province has to offer, and to stay away from activities that will cause unrest.

He said those who break the law and consume alcohol on beaches will face the full might of the law.

"The government will be working holistically with all its servants to bring perpetrators to book. We appeal to everyone to behave and not to bring alcohol to the beaches to avoid unnecessary drowning."

He promised visitors that they will be well looked after.

Police, traffic officers and other security agencies will be out in full force throughout.
