Amla left out of World Cup

IN-FORM Proteas batsman Hashim Amla was cut from the final Standard Bank Pro20 squad for the ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies from the end of next month.

The Dolphins batsman, who is second on the ICC Test cricket world rankings, was hoping to add to his two T20 caps after a sensational run of form in the longer forms of the game, especially on the recent tour of India, but Proteas selectors opted for the big hitters for the tournament in the West Indies from April 30 to May 16.

"It was nice to be named in the provisional squad for the T20 World Cup, and I am in the ODI squad for the West Indies. This, with my county commitment, means a busy season ahead," the humble Amla told Sowetan yesterday.

"Hopefully the hard work and perseverance will pay off and I can play my part for my team and, most importantly my country, in all forms of cricket for South Africa. And I wish my teammates who are in the T20 World Cup squad all the best."

Amla has signed a short term-contract with county side Nottinghamshire for the first seven weeks of the 2010 county season.

The Proteas play warm-up matches against Sri Lanka on April 27 and England on April 28, both at the Kensington Oval.

Their pool matches are against India at Beausejour (St Lucia) on May 2 and Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval on May 5.
