THE collapse of a wooden floor at the popular Max Lifestyle Club in Umlazi's V section has attracted the attention of KwaZulu-Natal MEC for economic development and tourism Mike Mabuyakhulu and the department of labour.

The wooden deck of the popular venue caved in on Sunday night when revellers were enjoying themselves. It is believed that the combined weight of partygoers caused the deck to cave in, sending patrons flying into a two-metre deep ditch.

Mabuyakhulu expressed his sympathy to the victims and said he would wait for the authorities to complete their investigations before taking action.

eThekwini's development planning, environment and management unit head Soobs Moonsammy yesterday confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the structural collapse of the deck was under way.

The department of labour issued a prohibition notice stopping the use of the entire deck until its stability is checked and approved by a qualified structural engineer.

Max Lifestyle Club is rated as one of the top 10 township restaurants by SA Tourism. It is marketed on the Durban 2010 Host City website as a "unique township experience".

Max Lifestyle Club owner Max Mqadi said he was "concerned and sorry about what happened".
