Man in court over killing of UCT student

THE man accused of murdering University of Cape Town student Dominic Giddy appeared briefly in the Cape Town magistrate's court yesterday.

Zukisani Sonqwaku, 22, of Zone 15, Langa, will remain in custody until April 8, when his bail application is to be heard.

Giddy, a 22-year-old social science student, was confronted in the Cape Town suburb of Observatory on February 13 by three men who tried to rob him and two companions.

Giddy was stabbed in the chest and died on the way to hospital.

Prosecutor Gail October said yesterday that investigators had established that Sonqwaku used Giddy's cellphone, stolen in the attack, to make calls to several people immediately after the murder. When he was arrested, he had a cellphone linked to another robbery.

Asking for the postponement, she said the state did not yet have the information it needed for a bail hearing.

Sonqwaku's attorney Tatum Scullard objected to the delay. The hearing had been scheduled for yesterday.

She said Sonqwaku was arrested on March 19 and the state should by now have the information it needed.

She also said three witnesses had been unable to identify Sonqwaku at an identification parade. - Sapa
