TWO prominent radio personalities are leaving the airwaves.

TWO prominent radio personalities are leaving the airwaves.

Renowned journalist and well-known SAfm AM Live co-host Tim Modise and Lawrence Dube, the high-flying popular Drive Time host at Kaya FM, are both presenting their last shows today.

Modise hosted AM Live, a current affairs programme, with Tsepiso Makwetla from 6am to 8am on weekday mornings. He then presented the After Eight Debate, which flights between 8am and 9am weekdays.

The heavyweight talk show host is joining Sizwe Africa - an Information Technology company in which he has shares - as chief executive officer.

He assumes his duties at the Midrand-based company from tomorrow. "I have worked on media as my main job and done other things as a subsidiary. This has changed. The key thing at the moment is running a successful business.

"Hosting a show while running a company would not have served the interests of the listeners."

He added that he was not sure who his replacement would be.

"I assume that Tsepiso Makwetla will run the show," he said.

Modise had earlier left the SABC in 2002 to pursue other broadcasting interests, eventually joining the 2010 Fifa World Cup Local Organising Committee as head of the communications portfolio.

He then rejoined SAfm in 2008.

Before then, he worked for Talk Radio 702, where he presented morning shows.

Dube was one of the founders of Kaya FM. "Starting Kaya reminded me of Barry Gordy when, against all odds, as a black man he started the historical record company that went on to produce stars," he said.

On leaving Kaya FM, he said: "I will remember mostly the spirit at the station. I will miss the interaction with people and musicians from here and abroad - and you can't buy that."

On his retirement plans, Dube said: "I want to spend time with myself, travel and recharge. Once I have done all of that, I can now dream about what I want to do - and it will all be revealed in time."
