Earth Hour is an insult to the poor masses

IT WAS amusing that South Africans were urged to switch off their lights for an hour last Saturday for Earth Hour, supposedly as part of a campaign to create awareness of global warming.

A noble thought but misguided in a developing country (and an impoverished continent) where a large chunk of the population has no electricity. The campaign should rather have been in support of people without electricity and water, something that the local chattering classes, armchair socialists, champagne communists and bourgeoisie simply take for granted.

It was interesting to see how many people, without a hint of consciousness about the lack of something as vital as electricity, took part in the charade. Just like sheep.

How poor people can stand by and see the affluent behave with utter disregard is astounding.
