THE annual Good Friday ecumenical march in Durban will focus on environmental justice.
The 25th Annual Diakonia Council of Churches' early morning Good Friday service will be held on Friday at the Durban Exhibition Centre from 5.15am. The guest preacher is Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town.
The first Diakonia Good Friday service in 1985 proceeded from the Central Methodist Church to the walls of Durban's Central Prison to pray for detainees.
The Diakonia Council of Churches has held Good Friday services and processions since then, each year highlighting one particular aspect of national suffering and injustice.
This year the Good Friday service will grapple with the issue of environmental justice: "Whatever we do, whatever choices we make, affect other people and the Earth itself. When we neglect our natural world we alienate ourselves from the Earth, from each other and even from God," said Diakonia chairperson Bishop Barry Wood.
After the service, congregants will march through the streets of Durban in reflective silent witness.
