WITH 74 days left before the World Cup kicks off, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for arts, culture, sport and recreation Weziwe Thusi wants to see women also benefit from the event.
Thusi said at a belated International Women's Day celebration in Stanger on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, at the weekend.
International Women's Day is celebrated worldwide on March 8.
"Through these activities we want to bring women along with us because they sometimes do not take part in such events," she said.
Thusi and her counterparts in the departments of finance, agriculture, human settlements and traditional affairs were joined by celebrities that included 1990s one-hit wonder and South African R&B sensation Ntokozo Masinga, Happy Gal and DJ Oros.
Together with Stanger's elderly and councillors, they took part in sporting events that included ingenious games, a girl's soccer tournament and volleyball.
The MEC also led a street parade to the KwaDukuza Recreation Sports Ground, where the aim was to create awareness of the World Cup and promote national symbols such as the national flag and anthem.
