Fast food giant promotes activity

THE South African Football Schools Association (Safsa) have bagged a R9million sponsorship from global fast food retailer McDonald's.

THE South African Football Schools Association (Safsa) have bagged a R9million sponsorship from global fast food retailer McDonald's.

They signed a three year R3 million a year deal to sponsor a new development soccer tournament to replace the Mille Under-Soccer Tournament.

The tournament will be known as the McDonald's Under-14 Cup targeting about 5600 primary schools in all the nine provinces.

"It is one of the legacy projects for us because McDonald's are one of the official partners of the 2010 Fifa World Cup," Safsa general secretary Steve Pila said.

"Safsa are excited to have McDonald's on board, the aim of this tournament is to link the various age groups.

"All our age groups are now sponsored and our children will play competitive soccer on a regular basis throughout South Africa," said Pila.

The school's governing soccer body also have an Under-12 tournament sponsored by Danone, Under-16 (Metropolitan) and Under-16 (Kay Motsepe).

Through their various competitions, Safsa have produced an array of quality players like Brian Baloyi, Andries Sebola, Masilo Modubi, Steven Pienaar and Thapelo Tshilo.

l Pila's son, Neo, died in a car accident in Kempton Park on Saturday. Neo was studying multimedia at Boston College in Johannesburg.
