ANTON Nel is back.
He blasted Pieter Cronje in 48 seconds of their 10 rounder at the Carousel gambling casino in Hammanskraal, North West, on Saturday night.
Their heavyweight fight was scheduled for 10 rounds. It was an official SA heavyweight title eliminator presented by promoter Warren Greenway, who staged his first professional boxing fight.
Nel put himself in line for a crack at Obsborne Machimana in an attempt to regain the the national heavyweight belt that Nel lost to Machimana in 2005.
Appearing for the first time since taking a deserved break in 2006, Nel, 38, looked good at 118,32 kilograms while Cronje, 27, whose last fight in a local ring was on November 12 2007 when he was stopped in seven rounds by Machimana, was solid at 102-57 kilograms.
Nel was ushered to war by veteran trainer Kosie Wiese while productive trainer Harold Volbrecht manned Cronje's corner.
Nel showed his intentions immediately after referee Thabo Spampool said "box on". He moved straight forward, but it was Cronje, who threw a jab, which was followed by a straight right in an attempt to force Nel to back off.
The jab missed, but the right hit Nel's arms. Nel responded with a stiff jab which landed flush on Cronje's face forcing him to crouch. Nel, artfully moved to the side, and let loose well executed hard combinations to the body.
Cronje focused on defending himself than fighting back and Spampool, rightly, stepped in and waived the fight over.
Meanwhile Illunga Makaba brushed Elvis Moyo aside in two rounds. This was Makabu's third stoppage win in a month.
Johnny Muller and Wiseman Dlomo drew after six rounds in the heavyweight division while Kyle Bothma outpointed Samson Ndlovu over four rounds in their catchweight fight.
Other result: Cruiserweight: Alex Mbaya (Dr Condo) beat Soon Botes (SA) tko 8; female four rounder (middleweight): Esther Mashiye and Fransisca Mband drew.
l Nkosinathi Joyi dethroned Raul Garcia of the IBF mini flyweight belt in East London on Saturday night while Takalani Ndlovu and Ali Funeka lost in their bids to win IBF junior feather and lightweight belts against Steve Molitor and Joan Guzman, respectively, overseas.
Themba Joyi, Nkosinathi's elder brother, retained the SA bantamweight title with a unanimous 12 round points over Zolile Mbityi.
