Be smart this Easter

ANOTHER long weekend is on us and you had better be smart this Easter.

ANOTHER long weekend is on us and you had better be smart this Easter.

Many people will be driving under the influence of liquor, thereby breaking the law. It could be worse than that, they might be involved in an accident and if that happens a number of repercussions could follow.

Neelan Porthen of Liberty Life offers some smart tips for surviving the Easter holidays:

l Don't break the law. Many people think their insurance policies will always cover them if something bad happens. This is wrong, as policies often contain exclusions - breaking the law is just one of them.

If something happens to you while you are breaking the law, you will not be covered by your insurance. You cannot hide from this fact, so make sure you don't do anything you and your family may regret.

l Don't drink and drive. If you're involved in an accident while over the limit you can kiss your entire cover goodbye. You might be fully covered, but if something goes wrong while you are over the legal limit - or doing anything illegal, for that matter - you or your family will get nothing. If you drink, don't drive; if you drive, don't drink.

Remember, the insurer will know if you are over the legal limit since they will do tests - if you are going to drink, arrange for someone else to drive so you don't take the risk.

l Before you travel check to make sure that you are still fully covered in case the unfortunate happens. Make sure your life and funeral covers are in order. It's also a good idea to have a medical aid or hospital plan in case you are injured.

These types of cover are essential, especially when you are travelling - the roads are a dangerous place, even more so during this busy holiday period. The last thing you want is to realise you are not covered at the time when you need it most. For example, if you have missed a premium, you may no longer be covered.

l Also remember that your cover will have certain exclusions - you need to empower yourself by understanding these. Consumers need to know when they will be paid out, and when they won't. If you are doing something adventurous this Easter, like sky-diving, bungee jumping or off-roading, make sure your cover includes these activities. Your insurer can give you a list of exclusions so that you know exactly when you won't be covered.

l It's a good idea to call your insurer to make sure your cover is up to date, and that you are fully insured in case anything goes wrong. It's also a good opportunity to check that your beneficiaries are correct. That way you and your family can enjoy your time off knowing that you are covered.
