Opposition alliance is a threat to democracy

THE mooted opposition alliance is a serious threat to our young democracy.

Parties championing this view are either close to defunct or without clear alternative policies to those of the ANC. South Africans should refuse to accept the erosion of our history of struggle against poverty and underdevelopment.

When Cope was formed it advocated change in the electoral system to allow for the direct election of public representatives, in particular the president. Now the solution seems to be in forming a club of opposition parties to oust the ANC government. Let us save our democracy from the kind of tendencies mooted by the ID and like-minded smaller parties.
