ANC nominations to be 'transparent'

THE ANC is to make the nomination of its candidates in the coming local government more transparent.

THE ANC is to make the nomination of its candidates in the coming local government more transparent.

ANC Gauteng general secretary David Makhura yesterday said unlike in the past, when nominations were more top-down with the ANC leadership identifying the candidates, nominations would be made at open branch meetings.

Makhura acknowledged that the top-down nomination process had led to situations in which the ANC leadership had imposed discredited individuals on communities.

This led to the party having weak municipality structures and protests by communities.

DA leader Helen Zille said this week that the opposition could unseat the ANC in Port Elizabeth, with the DA having won recent by-elections in the area.

Last year ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe warned Gauteng councillors about the planned assault by the opposition on Ekurhuleni and Tshwane metros.

This week the DA said its victories in recent by-elections showed it was consolidating its dominance in Western Cape.

Since last May the party has won five seats in the province, with four seats previously held by the ANC.
