Outrageous

BAR a whimper from trade union federation Cosatu, the silence surrounding the sale by auction of a signed copy of the Freedom Charter by English auctioneers Bonhams is deafening.

BAR a whimper from trade union federation Cosatu, the silence surrounding the sale by auction of a signed copy of the Freedom Charter by English auctioneers Bonhams is deafening.

It was to go under the hammer yesterday in London.

It is cold comfort that the sale carried the proviso that the highest bidder could only be someone who lives in South Africa. What is at issue is that someone had the gall to sell a significant part of our history for a paltry R333 000.

As a nation we should be outraged.

"The Freedom Charter," Nelson Mandela famously remarked, "captured the hopes and dreams of the people and acted as a blueprint for the liberation struggle and the future of the nation".
