PAUL Tshehla, boss of Mpumalanga Boxing Promotions, is one small promoter who manages to punch above his weight when it comes to staging tournaments.
He has given action to fighters from several provinces, something many bigger promoters have failed to do.
The kind of tournament Tshehla will present at the Banquet Hall of the Civic Centre in eMalahleni on April 16 requires a big budget.
He will bring fighters from Gauteng, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Free State, while others will travel from Mpumalanga.
Tshehla will be responsible for their transport, food and accommodation, yet his only source of income is the SABC, which will pay him about R120000 for the broadcasting rights for only the main fight - the national junior middleweight championship between champion Tshepo Mashego and Johannes Salie.
Mashego should take home around R50000, while Salie's purse money could be around R15000. Tshehla has included a 12-rounder for the vacant World Professional Boxing Federation junior middleweight title between Page Tshesane and Charles Manyuchi.
The two fighters will split about R30000.
There will be three six-rounders and three four-rounders.
Admission is R50 and Tshehla is not guaranteed a full house.
Mashego, who is trained by Lawrence Ngobeni, should retain the title. Mashego has 18 wins (10 KOs) against 10 defeats while Salie is still finding his feet, with nine wins against two defeats.
Tshehla has beautified his event by including a female four-rounder in the junior featherweight division between Gabisile Tshabalala from Everton and Nthabiseng Mafabatho from Ficksburg. Tshehla calls his tournament "Double Trouble".
The action will begin at 7pm. The Mashego-Salie fight will be broadcast live on Blow by Blow at 10.30pm.
