ALEXANDRA Football Association has praised Fifa for ensuring the township will have a legacy project after the World Cup in the form of a new sports facility.

This was after the construction of No 3 Square Sports Stadium, which will host the Football for Hope festival during the World Cup, was completed.

Top Fifa and South African soccer bosses, legends and community leaders will attend a function at the venue tomorrow to officially open it.

"We are excited that the facility has been completed, everything is going according to plan in terms of the preparations," said AFA chairperson Moss Selolo.

"Youngsters have already been selected for the festival. We are happy the legends of Alexandra are also on board too, like Shakes Kungwane, Brian Baloyi and Maimane Phiri.

"Alexandra may not be hosting the World Cup matches but we are happy that we will have something to show off as a legacy project after the tournament.

"We are also happy that thousands of Alexandra residents are working as volunteers in various structures to ensure we have a successful World Cup in South Africa."

Other prominent soccer personalities who are originally from Alexandra include Irvin Khoza, Leepile Taunyane and Dan Leboa.

Khoza, the chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, may have relocated to Soweto but he spends most of his leisure time in Alexandra with the people he grew up with. Tomorrow's ceremony will also see World Cup mascot Zakumi appearing in Alexandra along with World Cup ambassadors like Phil Masinga, Mark Fish and Doctor Khumalo.
