THE South African Democratic Students Movement has expressed concern over the Department of Higher Education and Training's "neglect" of Further Education and Training (FET) colleges.

Sadesmo president Ntuthuko Majozi said: "We are very disturbed by the ill-treatment of FET colleges by the department. The managements run these institutions as their personal businesses and exploit students while the department is not doing anything."

He said this past weekend they visited King Sabata Dalindyebo FET college in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, where they witnessed some of the conditions that students confront everyday in these institutions. "We were shocked and dismayed to see and hear about their situations.

"They have no food, poor infrastructure, and accommodation is the main problem where 13 students share a single room. This is the daily life for many FET colleges in this country and it is not acceptable," he said.

Sadesmo urged the Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande to act urgently in ensuring that FET colleges have proper funding. - Canaan Mdletshe
