Birds out to cap fine performance in Confed Cup

MOROKA Swallows have the chance to match the achievements of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs and become continental champions.

MOROKA Swallows have the chance to match the achievements of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs and become continental champions.

Pirates won the African Champions league in 1995 while Chiefs became the African Cup Winners Cup champions in 2001. Swallows want to follow suit. The Dube Birds are in the African Confederations Cup. They go into second leg against Caps United from Zimbabwe at Rand Stadium next week.

Swallows drew 1-1 with United in the first leg at the Rufaro Stadium in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Captain Lefa Tsutsulupa says they would like to win the tournament but are under no pressure.

"We have decided to give it our best," he said. "Obviously we would like to do well but to be honest, playing in this tournament is more of a learning curve for us."

Swallows have just the right players, one of them being Siyabonga Nomvethe, whose devastating form saw him win the February player of the month award. Nomvethe was at it again on Sunday when he scored the Birds' goal.

Tsutsulupa believes on current form Nomvethe should be given another chance with the national team. "He is scoring a lot now and considering that there are players in the squad who are not even regulars at their clubs, I would say he deserves a chance."
