THE situation was quiet in Leandra and Ogies in Mpumalanga yesterday following a rampage by residents over service delivery since Thursday, police said.

"Everything is quiet and calm and no more arrests were made," Captain Leonard Hlathi said.

At the weekend, police arrested 16 protesters for public violence in Leandra, bringing the number of arrests to 29.

Hlathi said on Saturday night, protesters set fire to a municipal office, the civic centre and a construction company office.

Earlier that day, protesters had barricaded the R50 and stoned cars, destroyed buildings and police vehicles.

In Ogies, residents took to the streets on Thursday complaining about local mines employing foreigners instead of locals.

They torched a truck, two bakkies and vandalised property. The protesters also attacked a police reservist's home.

Hlathi said 32 people had been arrested in Ogies. - Sapa
