A SECURITY guard was shot and wounded, allegedly by his supervisor, who then committed suicide at the Crossroads Plaza mall in KwaMhlanga yesterday, Mpumalanga police said.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Nonhlanhla Kgosana said the 35-year-old Lilongwe Security Company supervisor was booking and handing out service pistols to his staff when he shot the guard once in the head.

The two were alone in the office at the time.

"At this stage we do not know what led to the shooting. The bullet pierced the head of the guard and went out the other side," Kgosana said. "But he managed to dash out and screamed for help."

A male cleaner at the mall ran to the office to investigate. The supervisor fired another shot at the door, missing the cleaner.

"The supervisor locked the door and shot himself once in the head. His body was found lying on the floor of the office in a pool of blood with a .357 magnum revolver in his hand," Kgosana said.

The guard was taken to KwaMhlanga Hospital in a critical condition. - Sapa
