THE late Thabo High School headmaster Modise Philemon Segale has been decribed as a man who went the extra mile for his school and the learners.

Japie Sedie, a colleague of Segale at Thabo High School in Naledi, Soweto, said Segale, was one man who did not have the word "failure'' in his vocabulary.

He was paying tribute to Segale when he and his colleagues went to comfort the deceased's family at 3 Springbok Street, Greenhills, in Randfontein.

Segale, 61, died last Wednesday at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital of kidney failure.

Segale had a soft spot for both learners and teachers.

"His wish was to see teachers displaying great leadership skills,'' Sedie said.

Segale died two months after a pupil at the school, Nomsa Mokone, committed suicide.

"Mokone is said to have thought she had failed matric when her name did not appear in the newspapers. It was only discovered later that she had not done badly and only had two subjects to supplement,'' Sedie said.

Segale, a member` of the Bakgatla Ba Kgafela under Chief Nyalala John Pilane, was born in 1949 at Disake village, Rustenburg.

He received his primary and high school education at Modimong before proceeding to the Wilberforce Teachers Training College in Evaton in the Vaal in 1970.

He taught at Mapetla High and Mohato Primary before his appointmen as principal at Thabo HighSchool in 1981.

Some of his products from Thabo High include Jovial Rantao, (editor at the Star), Professor Sipho Seepe and his late brother, Jimmy Seepe, who was political editor at City Press)

Segale was also branch chairman of the African National Congress in Dobsonville for many years and also helped in establishing many other ANC branches in Soweto and in Randfontein.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel, two daughters and a grandson.

He will be buried tomorrow at Greenhills Cemetery in Randfontein at noon aftrer the service at the Greenhills Rugby Stadium from 9am.
