A FREE State man was sentenced to two life terms by the Bethlehem regional court yesterday for raping two girls in 2008.

Sello Paulus Mbele, 45, of Phola Park in Bohlokong, raped the two girls in his shack, the court found.

He also received an additional 40 years for attempting to rape four other girls.

All the girls were aged between seven and 14 when the incident took place.

Mbele met the six children in the street in November 2008. He asked the older girl, who knew him, to clean his shack and then went to a nearby shop to drink. When he returned after sunset he found the girls still cleaning the shack and he locked the door.

He then raped the two girls and attempted to rape the other four. The children managed to escape, went home but said nothing.

One of the girls, who was seven, had an infection and was taken to Phekolong Hospital near Bohlokong.

She told hospital staff what had happened. The police were called and opened a case on her and the other girls' behalf.

All the girls were admitted to hospital, where it was found the other raped girl also had an infection. Mbele was then arrested. - Sapa
