The three musketeers were appointed yesterday on a temporary basis after coach Hristo Stoichkov told a radio journalist he had quit the club.
Club spokesperson Alex Shakoane told Sowetan that the club's management and Stoichkov agreed to part amicably at a hastily arranged meeting yesterday.
Management was shocked to learn through the media that Stoichkov, who was paid R750 000 a month, had made it clear that he was no longer interested in coaching Sundowns. His contract was to expire in June. The temperamental Bulgarian shocked the nation on Tuesday night during Metro FM's Sports Centre show when he told host Robert Marawa: "I am not coaching Sundowns in the next season."
Shakoane told Sowetan: "We, as Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, agreed that we continue with Trott, Harris and Alex as interim coaches until the end of the season."
Shakoane pleaded with the club's supporters to be patient and cooperate with Moloto, Chueu and Bapela.
Moloto has coached Sundowns before, when Bapela was a player. Chueu is also a former Downs player.
Stoichkov had run foul of the Premier Soccer League's disciplinary committee this season for his lack of cooperation with the media. He is due to face the PSL's disciplinary committee next Tuesday on serious charges of bringing the league into disrepute.
He also made perplexing statements about the league and local soccer last month in a post-match television interview.
The Bulgarian, a former international and European Footballer of the Year with Spanish giants Barcelona, failed to deliver on one of the many contractual obligations - winning the league. Downs finished second to qualify for the African Champions League.
