Parliament's standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) yesterday grilled the Department of Social Development and South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) over its negative audit report last year.
Auditor-general Terrence Nombembe found that Sassa had overspent by R400million last year.
Sassa chief financial officer Mpho Mofokeng admitted yesterday that a further R300000 worth of assets from Sassa's 40 mobile trucks had gone missing.
The government spent R50 million on 40 mobile trucks to pay grants in rural areas but many of the trucks were idle for months, waiting to be repaired.
Mofokeng admitted that during that time Sassa wasted R1,2million on bandwidth that normally connects the trucks with Sassa computers.
Scopa chairperson Themba Godi said: "Somebody must be disciplined for that."
