In the scam the taxpayer receives an email stating he or she is eligible for R5000 to R8000 in tax refunds.
The email also says the taxpayer should submit a request for a refund and allow six to nine days to pass in order for it to be processed. The email is accompanied by Sars logo.
Sars spokesperson Adrian Lackay said it was a scam.
"People should ignore and delete it. It is one of the many examples of various scams doing rounds in newsrooms and in the public," Lackay says.
"Whenever a taxpayer receives a fax, email or letter through the post, they must call the Sars call centre to verify if the document comes from us."
The Sars call centre number is 0800-00-7277.
People can also report the scams to the Sars fraud and anti-corruption hotline on 0800-00-2870.
"At no stage must people disclose personal information such as identity numbers and bank account numbers to third parties," Lackay warned.
