THE KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union yesterday welcomed the arrest of two men linked to the farm attack that left a farmer seriously wounded and his wife dead in Colenso on Sunday night.
Farmer, Nigel Ralfe, 70, was shot twice and survived, but his wife Lynette, 68, died on the scene.
Ralfe was busy milking cows with his employees when they were approached by their attackers who demanded cash.
"We are pleased with the prompt work and compliment police," union president Robin Barnsley said.
"But the taking of a life for no reason is unacceptable,"
He said the organisation was concerned about the increase in the number of farm attacks. Apart from the Ralfe murder, a farmer was killed in Limpopo and another in North West.
"In this province we interact regularly with security forces and the authorities," Barnsley said. "But in certain quarters human life is regarded as being of no value.
"This is a societal issue that must be addressed by our leaders."
He said he was pleased that the national police leadership recently spoke out against the death of farmers, saying that all life is equal in the eyes of the government.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Jay Naicker said the two men would be charged with the Ralfe murder.
"They were found in possession of the farmer's firearm, believed to have been stolen during the attack," Naicker said.
He said six people were taken in for questioning on Monday and that two were detained.
They are expected to appear in court soon.
