I have quit Sundowns, Stoichkov says

MAMELODI Sundowns coach Hristo Stoichkov has quit.

MAMELODI Sundowns coach Hristo Stoichkov has quit.

"I am not coaching Sundowns in the next season," said the temperamental Bulgarian, who signed at the beginning of the season.

Speaking on Metro FM's Discovery Sports Centre last night, Stoichkov revealed that he had earlier met Sundowns management but they could not agree on terms for the renewal of his contract "and I decided to quit".

Stoichkov made it clear that it did matter what club president Patrice Motsepe felt. "It's my decision to make."

Attempts yesterday to get confirmation from Sundowns spokesperson Alex Shakoane drew a blank. His cellphone was constantly off.

The club's technical team assistant, Harris Chueu, sounded surprised by the breaking news.

"There is no such a thing. I was in a meeting with the president (Motsepe) a few minutes ago discussing club matters," he said when told that Stoichkov had been heard on radio announcing his resignation from the team he guided to second position in the league.

The resignation happened just after Absa Premiership prosecutor Zola Majavu announced that Stoichkov's case of misconduct relating to his use of "abusive and insulting language" on a referee was to be heard next Tuesday "with or without" Stoichkov or his European lawyers. He also faces another charge after allegedly sliding his finger across his throat in a threat to the match commissioner.
