VIOLENCE linked to the "work stoppage" by some Johannesburg taxi drivers upset about the roll-out of the next phase of the Bus Rapid Transit system was condemned yesterday.

"Through the strike action, the taxi operators are attempting to hold the City Of Johannesburg and, consequently, ordinary commuters, to ransom. No amount of violence will stop the BRT system," said the ANC in Gauteng, calling on authorities to step in.

Earlier, 10 taxi drivers were arrested for public violence in Jabulani, Soweto. Metrorail reported it had to remove burning tyres from its Naledi to Johannesburg line and that some coaches were stoned.

Police were also lining some of the routes, with extra Metrorail guards also dotted along that section of the line. - Sapa
