ENGLAND - Manager Phil Brown was fired yesterday by Premier League strugglers Hull.

Hull, who were second- to-last in the standings, put Brian Horton and Steve Parkin in charge temporarily.

"Retention of Premier League status is paramount and the board believes that a change in managerial direction is the correct option at this time," Hull chairperson Adam Pearson said.

Hull had come close to earning a draw with third-placed Arsenal on Saturday, but were denied by Nicklas Bendtner's injury-time strike.

Brown led Hull into the top division for the first time in their 104-year history in 2008 and, despite being firm favourites to be immediately relegated, the Tigers survived. Hull thanked him for that and wished him well. - Sapa-AP
