POLICE in Limpopo have warned job seekers to beware a fraudulent Internet scam that promises work in foreigncountries
The scam is said to be operating at Modimolle in the Waterberg district, where jobs were advertised on the Internet.
"In one such incident, an unsuspecting victim was tricked by a syndicate into paying about R30000 for a job which he did not get," said Superintendent Malesela Ledwaba yesterday.
He said once the jobs had been advertised, applicants would then send their curriculum vitae.
They soon received a response saying they were successful.
Ledwaba said the applicants were then told that there would be another process to follow.
The process entailed submission of bank accounts, visas and other related documents so that an "appointment" may be finalised.
He said the victims were also asked to deposit a certain amount of money, depending on the position which is being applied for.
Ledwaba also said the police were investigating three related cases around Modimolle.
He called on people in and around Modimolle who might have fallen victim to the scam to come forward to assist the police in their investigations.
Meanwhile, police in Tzaneen have warned people to be on the lookout for a middle-aged man who defrauds desperate job seekers by taking money from them after promising them jobs at a mine in Phalaborwa.
It is alleged that the suspect has already conned more than 20 people to pay him cash of between R300 and R500 each to be placed in jobs at one of the mines in Phalaborwa.
Some of the victims told Sowetan that the man disappeared as soon as he was given the money.
