Foreigners flee attacks by residents

SCORES of foreigners were forced to flee their homes and shops after protesting residents of Atteridgeville, Pretoria, stoned and looted their properties yesterday.

The incidents occurred in the informal settlements of Brazzaville, Phomolong and Jeff'sville in the township during a protest over service delivery.

A legal protest march, which was scheduled for yesterday, was called off after civic leaders met the police and officials of the Department of Human Settlements in Pretoria onTuesday.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tessa Jansen said 11 people were arrested for looting and stoning ofproperties.

A man who was allegedly found breaking into a foreigner's property was allegedly assaulted by members of the community, including some leaders.

Gauteng Civic Association general secretary of the Themba Ncalo said a satellite police station in Phomolong was stoned and a private vehicle set alight.

Ncalo said information that had reached his office yesterday was that locals threatened to attack the remaining properties belonging to foreigners last night.
