Mokoena used to teach maths and languages at primary school. He said he retired because instead of teaching he had to do administrative work.
Mokoena is one of the teachers who attended a seminar for retired teachers and principals called by Gauteng education MEC Barbara Creecy.
Creecy wants teachers who taught maths, science, accounting, English, technology, geography and biology to assist in schools.
"The biggest problem we have is that learner performance is not improving," Greecy said. "In Grade 3 less than 30 percent of learners can read and write, and less than 40 percent are numerate.
"In matric, we have a yo-yo effect. Some years they perform well and in others not. We are never able to break through the 80 percent barrier."
She said there were various ways in which retired teachers could assist, including sharing their experience, and assisting children with homework and Saturday classes.
Mokoena said: "I would not mind going back to school full-time if only they reduced the amount of paperwork that teachers have to deal with."
