Du Toit the toast of the country

SOUTH African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee president Gideon Sam and the SA Sports Association for Physically Disabled yesterday congratulated Natalie du Toit for winning the 2010 Laureus Disability Award.

SOUTH African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee president Gideon Sam and the SA Sports Association for Physically Disabled yesterday congratulated Natalie du Toit for winning the 2010 Laureus Disability Award.

The ceremony took place in Abu Dhabi, United Emirates, on Wednesday. This was an incredible victory for the swim star.

"Natalie has done us proud over the years. All South Africans can be proud of her spirit and her never-say-die attitude," said Sam.

Du Toit, who lost her left leg in a motorcycle accident in 2001, is one of five athletes who have competed in the Paralympics and Olympics.

Speaking after the ceremony she said: "I want to thank all the people who nominated and voted for me, this is good for South Africa, especially with the 2010 Fifa World Cup coming to our shores."

Said Koos Engelbrecht, chairperson of the SA Sports Association for Physically Disabled : "Natalie is undoubtedly a wonderful inspiration to all South Africans, whether they have a disability or not.

"Her determination to succeed has been a hallmark of her career."
