Plateau State police commissioner Ikechukwu Aduba gave a breakdown of the list of people killed and said the "total number of casualties therefore stands at 109. This figure is authentic and undisputed. Various unwholesome figures credited to the information commissioner are fabricated and should be discarded," he said.
The state's information commissioner Gregory Yenlong told AFP that more than 500 people had been killed in an orgy of violence in three predominantly Christian villages near Jos. The police chief said Yenlong was among a group of senior government, medical and police officials who witnessed while the body count was conducted.
Meanwhile, 49 members of the Muslim Fulani clan arrested after weekend attacks on Christian villages are to be charged with murder, the state police said yesterday.
"We have 49 Fulanis arrested after the attacks and in their statements they have confessed they were on a revenge. Charges for those arrested will be conspiracy and culpable homicide," Aduba said. - Sapa-AFP
