Public reports have revealed that the AI GP, Formula 1, BMW Sauber SBK and the Superstars contracts - that would see Gauteng hosting international motor and bike racing events - would have cost taxpayers R167million for the 2009/2010 financial year, R334million for 2010/2011 and R426million for R2011/2012.
Cachalia revealed this week that his department had saved more than R700million by cancelling the contracts.
The decision to host the races was endorsed by the previous provincial administration.
It is clear it had overlooked its responsibility as accountable public officials. They must all be held accountable.
