DURBAN University of Technology acting vice-chancellor Nqabomzi Gawe says the institution will appoint a new vice-chancellor after the resignation of Roy du Pré three weeks ago.
Gawe says the selection process is lengthy and requires cautious selection methods from the university council.
This is the first public acknowledgement that Du Pré has resigned.
Gawe said in a statement: "DUT's council is on track with the process of appointing a vice-chancellor.
This procedure will be finalised as soon as possible. The appointment is a council function and prerogative, and the necessary steps have been undertaken to ensure an appointment."
Students representative council spokesperson Sifiso Dlamini said the students were shocked to hear of Du Pré's resignation though they had differed with him at times.
He said Du Pré had made a positive contribution at the university.
"His departure does not mean the end of grievances from students against management, but it should be a wake-up call for non-performing staff in the university," said Dlamini.
Du Pré was not available for comment.
