Motlanthe becomes the fourth chancellor of the institution since its establishment in 1982.
He succeeds Cyril Ramaphosa as the institution's chancellor.
Among the dignitaries who attended the event were IEC chairperson Brigalia Bam, director-general in the department of Higher Education Mary Metcalfe, Safa president Kirsten Nematandani, Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale, and traditional leaders from the former Venda homeland.
In his acceptance speech, Motlanthe said "there was a need to produce graduates who were both responsive and sensitive to the needs of societies".
