Whoever told young people that ownership of the latest and perhaps fastest car meant the individual had arrived and therefore deserved the attention of their peers and of the rest of society?
Illegal racing is a scourge that regularly kills innocent people. Add drugs and stupidity to the mix and you have a fatal concoction.
We are certain, though, that our righteous anger will do nothing to ease the pain of the families of these four boys.
What is not up for discussion is that the idiotic behaviour of the driver of the car, along with that of those who spurred him on as he went his murderous way, deserves the strictest censure.
The police have arrested the louts. We hope what we have become so used to - missing dockets or poorly prepared cases - does not follow. And this has nothing to do with the arrested person being a celebrity.
Society is outraged and families are mourning. Our courts must reflect society's anger over the unnecessary death of four young people.
Our hopes now lie with the justice system to send a strong message that the family's grief and society's outrage has been heard.
