30 councils are warned

LIMPOPO premier Cassel Mathale has ordered all municipalities in the province to come up with a turn-around strategy that would speed up service delivery to communities.

Mathale, pictured, has given municipalities until the end of this month to come up with the strategies.

Mathale said when the provincial audit is completed by 2014, he wants to see all the 11 government departments, five district municipalities and 25 local municipalities receive clean audit reports from theauditor-general.

The Polokwane, Waterberg district, Musina, Fetakgomo, Mable Hall, Mopani district, Letaba and Aganang municipalities and eight provincial departments have received unqualified reports.

Mathale said the municipalities would be assisted by the provincial technical support unit, which is composed of members of the department of local government and housing, the office of the premier, provincial treasury and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) to compile thestrategies.

Mathale identified the turn-around strategies of the Molemolle and Lephalale municipalities as pilot programmes.

He said the province would work in close cooperation with the Development Bank of Southern Africa and other key stakeholders to strengthen municipal skills.

Mathale said the officials would be trained on the accredited integrated development programme, executive training programme and local government accounting.

Salga deputy provincial chairperson Rosina Mokgotlane said yesterday the move would help municipalities and government departments to spend their budgets efficiently and effectively.

Mokgotlane applauded Mathale for the proposed training, saying more often than not skill shortages hampered service delivery.

She said Salga wouldsupport the new programme in "support of a better life for all".
