Storm warning

THE Stormers sent out a warning on Saturday that they are still a team to be reckoned with in this year's Super 14 when they convincingly put away the Highlanders 33-0 at Newlands in Cape Town.

THE Stormers sent out a warning on Saturday that they are still a team to be reckoned with in this year's Super 14 when they convincingly put away the Highlanders 33-0 at Newlands in Cape Town.

After a hiccup last week, when they lost 19-17 to the Brumbies, the Cape side got their campaign back on track with a polished display.

There's no doubt the Stormers' strength lies in their electrifying backline, and much to the crowds' delight they were given the freedom to express themselves.

Bryan Habana, Jaque Fourie, Joe Pietersen and Peter Grant all turned in blinders and Habana's try to earn the team a bonus point was pure class.

Intercepting a Highlanders backline move he scrambled and kicked downfield to win the race to the tryline with sheer pace.

Earlier replacement hooker Deon Fourie, in for Tiaan Liebenberg who had a touch of flu, displayed his all-round skills and anticipation when scoring out wide following a backline move.

Going into the second half 16-0 down, the Highlanders threw everything at the Stormers and for 10 minutes were camped inside the home side's 22m line.

The pressure failed to materialise into points and tries by Stormers replacement Pieter Louw and Schalk Burger sealed the game for the home side.

In the upset of the weekend, the Cheetahs raked up their second win of the competition with a surprising 28-12 win over the Hurricanes at Free State Stadium on Saturday night.

Moving up to eighth place on the log, the Cheetahs put together a solid performance for the full 80 minutes. A late try by replacement flanker Kabamba Floors and four penalties by Meyer Bosman and three conversions by Naas Olivier was enough to sink the always dangerous Hurricanes.

On Friday morning the Lions' disappointing Super 14 campaign continued with a 13-24 loss to the Brumbies in Canberra.

Yet to pick up a win in the competition. they were once again beaten as much by their own silly mistakes as they were the opposition.

For the Lions their points came from a Hannes Franklin try and a conversion and two penalties by debutant Burton Francis. The Brumbies' points came via tries by Stephen Moore, Christian Lealifano and a penalty try while flyhalf Matt Gitteau was spot on with three conversions and three penalties.

Lions wing Dusty Nobel is on his way home with a knee injury.

For the Sharks, things just don't seem to be going their way. Any hope of picking up their first win of the Super 14 season evaporated on Saturday morning when referee Paul Marks refused to award the Sharks a penalty try in the dying moments of the game when Waratahs replacement Kurtley Beale committed a professional foul with a try on the cards.

The Sharks were furious and ended up leaving the Sydney Stadium 21-25 losers.
