THE police have vowed to leave no stone unturned to ensure that the remaining six men who escaped from Westville Prison are back in jail soon.
A total of nine men escaped from Westville Prison on February 21.
One of the escapees, Nhlanhla Lucky Mhlongo, was gunned down when police stormed the house in which he was staying in Groutville, KwaDukuza, on the North Coast of Durban early on Saturday.
Mhlongo allegedly fired four shots at the police, but all of them missed. An officer returned fire and hit him once in the chest, killing him. Mhlongo was the third escapee who failed to escape the long arm of the law.
Other members of the gang were Thozamile Taki, a suspected serial killer who fell and broke his leg when he tried to escape, and Simon Bouque of N-Section, Umlazi. Bouque faces charges of robbery, murder and possession of an unlicenced firearm.
The police have sent Bouque to a maximum security prison in Kokstad.
Senior Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the police are on the heels of the six men still at large - Thulani Shandu, Sibusiso Thili Mzimela, Siboniso Zuma, Nkosinathi Nzama Mabaso, Nhlanhla Mduduzi Mngadi and Mandla Mavundla.
The men are described as dangerous.
"The police had no choice but to shoot at Mhlongo knowing what danger he posed to the community and to the police," Mdunge said. said.

"Mhlongo was responsible for a number of ATM bombings in northern KwaZulu-Natal," Mdunge said .

Bouque appeared in the Pinetown magistrate's court just hours after his arrest and pleaded guilty to the escape charge. He was given a three-year sentence.
The men escaped from the medium A section when they cut through steel doors, window bars and grille gates.
They are alleged to have used a sheet to make a makeshift rope that they used to climb down from the seventh floor.
