Pirates and Bafana are no shining stars

WHEN some of us wrote Gaborone United's obituary as soon as it was known that they would be facing the highly experienced, skilful and expensively assembled Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League, we thought it was a justified response.

I'm ashamed to say we were proven wrong.

And one can only wish that Moroka Swallows and Supersport United continue with the good work they are doing for our country at continental level.

As for Pirates, the sooner they remove that star on their jerseys the better.

Pity that Bafana Bafana, which has up to now been just like Pirates at continental level, want to wear the star too. If they deserve a star, let them fight for it. For starters, they must qualify for the Afcon and win it.

We should be producing a Bafana Bafana jersey bearing a star for the legends, who fought for their country and were deservedly crowned continental champions. Not for this current team.

If we are so much into stars, let's find a place for them on the Pirates and Bafana Bafana marketing products or somewhere more fitting. Better still, CAF should be taking away the star after a certain period if the team has failed to win the second one within that period. We cannot hold on to a waning star.

Our teams must start developing a killer instinct. When the opposition is there for the taking, we must bury them in an avalanche of goals.

We cannot continue being the Europe of most of our neighbours in terms of football and yet fail to conquer the continent on the field. We cannot only be known as the host of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
