ANC Youth League president Julius Malema ended a fortnight of acute scrutiny with a birthday bash as lavish as the lifestyle that has focused attention on him.

More than 5000 people, mostly elderly, converged on Seshego Stadium outside Polokwaneyesterday to give support to the township's most famous son as he celebrated his 29th birthday.

Malema said as someone raised by a grandmother he felt it was important to celebrate his birthday with senior citizens.

He again defended his right to enter into business if he so wished.

Some of the elderly enjoyed food ANCYL secretary Jacob Lebego said was prepared by "volunteer catering companies", while others had to be content with fruit distributed after the food had run out.

Musicians Rebecca Malope, Solly Moholo and Winnie Mashaba provided the entertainment.

In keeping with the latest trends, ANC leaders came in driving flashy cars, wearing designer clothes and were served expensive food and beverages.

Among the dignitaries who graced the occasion were President Jacob Zuma's aide, Zizi Kodwa, Limpopo MEC for roads and transport Soviet Lekganyane and Limpopo businessman Tom Boya .

The second leg of the celebration continued at Mekete Lodge, a private lodge just outside Polokwane, where the political elite partied the night away. - Sowetan Reporter
