A MAN and a six-month old toddler, died when a wall collapsed in Nongoma, northern Zululand, on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident - which happened when a Pick n Pay delivery truck hit a wall - killed the two instantly and left five more people seriously injured.

Provincial police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said: "Apparently the truck had finished delivering and was driving out of the Pick n Pay premises when its back door allegedly opened mysteriously and accidentally hit the fencing wall.

"The wall apparently came tumbling down, hitting six people who were standing nearby.

"A 50-year-old local man and a six-month-old baby girl, who was apparently strapped to her mother's back, died on the scene.

"The child's mother and four others were seriously injured and taken to hospital," Mdunge said.

Store manager, Senzo Zibani declined to comment, referring all queries to Pick n Pay's regional office in Durban.

Our attempt to get comment from Durban proved fruitless.

Meanwhile, a woman died when she was run over by a taxi in Durban yesterday.

"She was crossing the road and was in the middle when she was hit by the taxi, which pushed her forward and drove over her. She died instantly," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks.
