Polokwane in top gear

LIMPOPO Premier Cassel Mathale has assured Fifa that Polokwane is ready for the 2010 Fifa World Cup to be hosted at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

LIMPOPO Premier Cassel Mathale has assured Fifa that Polokwane is ready for the 2010 Fifa World Cup to be hosted at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

"We are on top of the situation in terms of our readiness for the World Cup," said Mathale after top-level Fifa and Local Organising Committee officials toured the city on Saturday.

The new stadium will host big teams like France, Algeria, Mexico, Greece and Argentina.

Some of the big-name soccer players who will be seen in action in Polokwane include Fifa's reigning Player of the Year Lionel Messi, his countryman Martin Palermo and Thierry Henry of France.

"The reports we are getting is that we are moving in the right direction. Polokwane and the whole of Limpopo is ready for the World Cup," Mathale said.

"Besides the soccer tournament, there are many things we are lining up for tourists from other provinces and countries in terms of entertainment.

"Thousands of people who will be coming for the tournament will be our ambassadors, so we have to make their stay here the best.

"The World Cup will be a perfect platform to market Limpopo."

Kedi Mabotja, a Limpopo resident who is involved in Polokwane's World Cup preparations, said: "The visit to Peter Mokaba Stadium by local and foreign media will help send out a message that Polokwane is ready."
