Mob burns home amid claims of witchcraft

THE Mafogo family in Sekororo, outside Tzaneen, Limpopo, is now homeless after angry community members burnt down their house.

The family of nine, accused of practising witchcraft, was first temporarily housed at the Maake police station in Lenyenye for safety.

They were later given refuge by a Good Samaritan at Burgersdorp village, about 20km away from Sekororo, until they found a place of their own.

The family is now without food, clothes and other basic human needs because all was lost in flames.

Malesela Letsoalo of Makgaung village in the same area says the community went on the rampage after a man from the Mafogo family was allegedly found stark naked in a neighbour's house just after midnight on Monday.

But, the Mafogo family has rejected the allegations.

"There are no witches in my family. We don't know the first thing about witchcraft or using a broom or bread to fly. These are the deeds of jealousy because of our success," said a relative, who asked to remain anonymous.

Limpopo police spokesperson Ronnel Otto said yesterday that the police were patrolling the village. She said no one had been arrested but they were investigating arson and malicious damage to property and public violence.
