I find it particularly disturbing that young people are in and out of jails for offences ranging from possession of unlicensed firearms, driving without a licence, housebreaking and rape.
We need to seriously revisit our traditional ways of upbringing where older people (including President Jacob Zuma) led by example and young people followed. The disregard for the value of human life and property, lack of respect and compassion, illegal self-enrichment through illegal means has plunged our country in tatters.
Let us look at corruption. The government is infested with corrupt officials and therefore poor governance/service delivery is widespread. Improving governance can improve the lives of poor people directly.
It is also essential for creating the environment for faster economic growth. Both aspects can be compromised by corruption which our government must address.
It is the poor who bear proportionally the heaviest cost. Dealing with corruption is thus a priority both in terms of who it most affects and in terms of which objectives of governance, including participatory and responsive government and economic growth, it constrains.
Everyone needs to lead the way by starting initiatives to enhance morality as a way of life and it all begins under someone's roof. Whether it is your son, daughter, parent or relative, let us show them the right way and then we can start making a difference.
